CALL TO WORSHIP  (The Abingdon Worship Annual 2025)                                      Rev. Michael Bailey

In these uncertain times, we come together, searching for peace.
            We will be still before the Lord and wait patiently.
We will open our hearts and minds, that the Lord may show us mercy.

          When we trust the Lord, we can do good things and live with one another
          in peace and security.

The Lord is our refuge in times of trouble. In God, we find forgiveness, mercy, and love.

         We will be still before the Lord and wait patiently.

GREETING AND OPENING PRAYER  (The Abingdon Worship Annual 2025)           Rev. Michael Bailey

Holy One, we come together to pause, pray, and praise. Be with us in this place, that we may touch your mercy. You provide for us; help us claim the power of your love for our lives. Help us to measure out grace, shaking it together with forgiveness and give them to others as you would have us do. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST                                                                                      Rev. Michael Bailey

You are members of God’s beloved community.  Greet one another with the peace of Christ.

As we pass the peace of Christ, greet one another in ways you feel are healthy and comfortable for you.

*HYMN                                                        Jesu, Jesu                                                                                       432

*PSALTER                                         Psalm 37: 1-7 (UMH 772)                                                    Nancy Hiley

Do not be angry because of the wicked, do not be envious of evildoers!

            For they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb.

Trust in the Lord and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.

           Take delight in the Lord, who will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord, trust in God, who will act,

bringing forth your vindication as the light, and your right as the noonday.

         Be still and wait patiently before the Lord; do not be angry because of those who                  prosper in their way, because of those who carry out evil desires!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH      The Apostles’ Creed (UMH 881)                                         Nancy Hiley

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

The third day he rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven,

              and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

              from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

  the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

  the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

SCRIPTURE                                            Genesis 45:3-11                                                             Nancy Hiley

3 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. 4 So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; do not tarry. 10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 There I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to come, so that you and your household, and all that you have, do not come to poverty.’

Liturgist: The Word of God for the people of God.
