“Foster” by Claire Keegan.

It is a hot summer in rural Ireland. A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. In the Kinsellas’ house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new household—where everything is so well tended to—and this summer must soon come to an end.

A story of astonishing emotional depth, Foster showcases Claire Keegan’s great talent and secures her reputation as one of our most important storytellers.

From the Pastor’s Desk:

In the deserts of Arabia, some 4,000 ago the Semite people wandered and each month they paid homage to the rising of the new moon.  As they saw the first bit of moonlight, they shouted, “Hilal!” which was an expression of gratitude and celebration.  Many, many years later the Hebrew people passed through the same desert and heard the shout and took it up as a their shout of praise, not to the moon but for God and God’s many blessings. In their language, with the sacred name of God, “Yahweh” added to it their praise shout evolved into “Hallelujah or Alleluia”.

On  a cold winter night in 1741, the old man trudged through the streets of London.  He had seen some fame, but that life of fame seemed all but over.  And that lifestyle had taken its toll on him:  he suffered from a stroke that paralyzed his right side and was fortunate that some time in the hot springs of Aix-la-Chapelle had restored some use of his right hand and leg.  He arrived at his flat that very night and found the text of a music composition, written by a poet named Charles Jennens.  The old man flipped through the text and one phrase struck him to the core.  Suddenly, he could hear in his mind wondrous melodies, and he began to feverishly pen music to go with the words of the poem.  He composed for 23 straight days.  The old physically broken man was George Federick Handel and the piece he composed is “The Messiah”.  The triumphant climax of the oratorio is the “Hallelujah Chorus”.  As he looked at the words and musical notes he said, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me and the great God himself.”

May this Easter find us praising God with not only our lips but with our whole lives - heart, mind, soul and strength.

     Christ is risen!

     He is risen indeed!

     Alleluia!

Happy Easter to you and yours,
Pastor Mike

Worship for the Feeding the Growth of Your Soul  - For All to Attend

Our United Methodist Book of Worship states:  Holy Week is the final week of Lent,

beginning with Passion/Palm Sunday and concluding with Holy Saturday.

It is during these days that the readings focus primarily on the last days and suffering and death of Jesus.

Our United Methodist Book of Worship relates: “The Great Three Days—sometimes called the Triduum or Pasch—from sunset Holy Thursday through sunset Easter Day are the climax of Lent (and of the whole Christian year) and a bridge into the Easter Season. These days proclaim the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ's passion, death, and resurrection. During these days, the community journeys with Jesus from the upper room, to the cross, to the tomb, and to the garden. They should be seen as a great unified service beginning with a service of Holy Communion on Holy Thursday and concluding with the services of Easter Day”.

Tryon United Methodist Church invites and encourages worshiping

at the following times and places where TUMC will be present and participating:

April 17, 7 p.m, Maundy Thursday.  The Congregational Church, UCC

210 Melrose Ave, Tryon, NC.  Combined choirs of several other congregations and Rev. Bailey and

other clergy will lead this service which remembers the Upper Room, the servant-hood of

Jesus and the institution of Communion.

April 18, 4 p.m. Good Friday at Tryon UMC.  Tryon UMC will offer a “Service of Shadows” known as Tennebrae from its Latin roots.  This simple and yet meaningful service consists of readings of the betrayal of Christ with the extinguishing of candles and might be likened to a reverse candle light service.  The service ends in silence.

April 20, 6:30.  Easter Sunrise.  This community tradition features many local churches, musicians and clergy, including some of our friends at TUMC and our pastor.  After the service the First Baptist church has a light breakfast.

April 20, 11 a.m. Easter at Tryon UMC.  Join us for your favorite hymns, an uplifting sermon and fun for all the children and grandchildren in attendance. And as regular attenders know,

TUMC has one of the best after-worship coffees anywhere!

Here’s to the bridge-builders, the hand-holders, the light-bringers, those extraordinary souls wrapped in ordinary lives who quietly weave threads of humanity into an inhumane world.  They are the unsung heroes in a world at war with itself.  They are the whisperers of hope that peace is possible.

Look for them in this present darkness. Light your candle with their flame.

And then go. Build bridges. Hold hands.  Bring light to a dark and desperate world.

Be the hero you are looking for. Peace is possible.  It begins with us.

Jesus said to them, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
